An iconic landmark in Kolkata, the Howrah Bridge is a huge steel bridge over the Hooghly River. It is considered to be one of the longest cantilever bridges in the world. Also known as Rabindra Setu, it connects Howrah and Kolkata. It carries 100,000 vehicles and countless pedestrians daily. Howrah Bridge has been standing strong for the past 76 years, with no pillars supporting its suspension over the Hooghly River and has also witnessed several historical events including the World War II. As a photographer based in Malaysia I am rather lucky that so many incredible places are relatively close-by, the frantic Indian city of Calcutta being one of them. I love Calcutta. It’s my favourite city in India. It’s a mad place! It’s a city of colonial architecture, museums, art galleries, traditional food, temples, music and theatre. It is an amalgamation of traditional and modern. It is famous for its theatre and films. It is the land of Rabindranath Tagore and the beautiful sound of Rabindra Sangeet can be heard from every house. I took this photo while traveling across the bridge from the train station in an iconic yellow ambassador taxi, which I shot below. You see these iconic cars in every nook and cranny of this remarkable city.
